Maths
Our vision is that children understand that Maths is an essential tool for everyday life. It is a whole network of concepts and relationships that provide a way of viewing and making sense of the world. It is used to analyse and communicate information and ideas and to tackle a range of practical tasks and real life problems. We want our children to embrace their learning in Maths with positivity and self-belief, and to realise that we are all successful mathematicians, every single day of our lives.
Maths is a key issue on the School Improvement Plan. To support staff in teaching high quality Maths and enabling children to learn maths to a high standard school have embarked on the Master Maths Programme through the East Midlands West Maths Hub as well as The Mastering Number, NCETM project Mastering Number | NCETM.
Below are some examples of our children being actively involved in their Maths please see our Twitter page @stjs_staveley and search #joeysmaths for more.
Organisation of the Curriculum
Mathematics is organised into the following areas;
- Number
- Ratio and Proportion
- Algebra
- Measurement
- Geometry
- Statistics
Early years
Involves providing children with opportunities to develop and improve their skills in counting, understanding and using number, calculating simple addition and subtraction problems; and to describe shapes, spaces, and measures. Link to the Early Years curriculum
Key Stage 1
The principal focus of mathematics teaching in key stage 1 is to ensure that pupils develop confidence and mental fluency with whole numbers, counting and place value. This should involve working with numerals, words and the 4 operations, including with practical resources. Link to the Key Stage One Curriculum
Key Stage 2
Years 3 and 4
The principal focus of mathematics teaching in lower key stage 2 is to ensure that pupils become increasingly fluent with whole numbers and the 4 operations, including number facts and the concept of place value. This should ensure that pupils develop efficient written and mental methods and perform calculations accurately with increasingly large whole numbers.
Years 5 and 6
The principal focus of mathematics teaching in upper key stage 2 is to ensure that pupils extend their understanding of the number system and place value to include larger integers. This should develop the connections that pupils make between multiplication and division with fractions, decimals, percentages and ratio.
